Sonobe Sangyo bases its craftsmanship on "Odawara Woodenware," which is a local industry in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
A single plate requires few months to be manufactured, as Sonobe Sangyo's craftsmen select and dry the wood, mold using potter's wheel, and paint all by themselves.
As the material is wood, the soft texture which one could feel when held in their hands is one of the plate's characteristics. Further, any food placed on this plate, whether Japanese or Western, would become good-looking.
Sonobe Sangyo's plates are wooden plates that are moderately thick and with which users become enamored and feel the appreciation of nature. They are recommended as gifts for birth celebration, new house, and wedding.
Odawara Woodenware
As the neighboring Izu and Hakone contained rich nature within the regions, production utilizing wood as material prospered in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture.
In the Edo period, woodenware made at Odawara became popular among travelers traveling Hakone and Tokaido.
The popularity showed no signs of slowing down, and even during the post-war period, the woodenware utilizing high-quality wood and technology was highly regarded, exporting salad bowls abroad.
Even today, the high-quality wooden materials and technology are surely handed down.
Cherry
Sakura is a wood truly loved by Japanese people. Sakura's characterized by its detailed and glossy quality. Yet the material is strong and any vessel made of Sakura is stout. Sakura also combines feminine beauty and strength.
Maple
Itaya Kaede is a wood that grows in Northern Japan. Its color ranges from white to reddish, and its texture is fine, tenacious, shiny, and smooth, while it is rare in material as it produces glossy, wave-like grains called "Shrinkage" as well as grains called "Bird's Eye." Vessels made of maple are firm, strong, and comfortable to use.

Due to their performance of exporting many wooden salad bowls to Europe, they have received a certificate from the Japanese government, which highly evaluates their contribution to the Japanese trade and industry, for 6 years in a row since 1965.
