Onta Ware's Vessel
Onta ware has been crafted for over 300 years in the Sarayama district, nestled in the mountains of Hita City, Oita Prefecture. Today, just nine pottery kilns continue to preserve the traditional production methods passed down since its inception.
Once acclaimed as "the world's finest folk pottery" by Soetsu Yanagi, Onta ware consists of practical everyday wares designed for daily living rather than mere display. Its rustic texture, conveying the natural warmth of clay, along with its regular geometric patterns, complements a wide variety of dishes—from Japanese to Western cuisine—making it a valued piece for long-term daily use. |

Onta ware
Founded in 1705 in the Motoemachi Sarayama district of Hita City, Oita Prefecture, by San'emon Yanase, a potter of Koishiwara ware, alongside Jubei Kuroki from Otsuru Village in Hita District. It was praised as "the world's finest folk pottery" by Soetsu Yanagi, a leading figure of the Mingei (folk crafts) movement. In 1995, it was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. |
