Sunami Toru Shoten, established in 1886, originally manufactured woven-rush mat in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, the birthplace of rush and flowered matting.
The family business has been maintained by switching to the production of rush baskets, called "yamikago," which were used in the black market after the war.
Currently, Mr. Ryuki Sunami, the fifth generation of the family, is the only one in Japan who makes each basket by hand, using the method he learned from his grandmother.
Not only can you enjoy its cool texture on a daily basis, but it can also be used as an eco-friendly bag to help reduce plastic bags.
